about

Boomtown Bustle

The current ghost towns of Lehigh, Cambria, Willow Creek, Arcadia, East Coulee, and Wayne were all once bustling mining centres of trade and settlement. When a mine opened its’ doors, waves of workers flooded into town and buildings popped up nearly overnight. However, when the mines shut down, the population and its’ buildings fled just as quickly as the towns were initially settled.

“Suddenly, the isolated ranching community was transformed into a bevy of wild coal mining towns rife with restless coal miners. Although the area was late in its development in comparison to other mining communities in Alberta, the Drumheller Valley experienced tremendous economic growth as huge influx of people seeking gainful employment and enterprise poured into the region via Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian Northern Railway.”
